Temperature Monitoring: Railroad Temperatures

A severe heat wave has inspired more strict regulations in monitoring temperatures of railroad tracks in Prince George, D.C. after a train derailed from the tracks. It’s been speculated by experts that the recent intense heat is to blame for warping the train tracks. This was the second time in three months that a train had deviated from the tracks due to high temperature incurred kinks.

Temperature Monitoring Requirements

Temperature Monitoring Protocol

Rail safety consultants are well aware that tracks must be closely monitored for dangerous temperature conditions, however, it is difficult to tell where along the tracks a kink might occur. When heat is applied to the tracks, the metal expands, therefore, once a week, the temperature of every section on the track will be checked; for above-ground tracks, the tracks will be monitored more frequently when temperatures exceed 95°F.

Temperature Monitoring Solution

Ravica has a perfect solution for monitoring the temperature conditions of the railroad tracks. I wonder if a web-based remote environmental monitoring tool is installed into their system. Ravica offers water proof temperature sensors that can be plugged into a two port BitSight 2 or 8 port BitSight 8 base unit.  The environmental monitoring system has the ability to send alert notifications using Email, SMS (via an email-to-SMS gateway) and SNMP Traps. Thus a temperature threshhold set to let’s say, 95°F will alert an administrator of the critical conditions and appropriate safety procedures can be approached.

The solution logs a history of temperature recordings graphically. Administrators can even observe conditions of the temperature monitoring sensor online in a live log.

Do you think physical monitoring is a good strategy of monitoring an entire railroad system?
